If your file is uploaded to a video hosting site – such as Youtube, it will be compressed using their codec. So, it’s best to start with your file at the best quality as possible. Use the following settings for your web video advert on video hosting sites and your website as well.

- Make it an Mp4 file, with H.264 codec. Mp4’s are currently the file format
flavour of the day, and of superior quality
- If it’s to be in standard definition, make it 640 pixels wide by 480 pixels high which is a 4×3 aspect video.
- If your video is to be in high definition, output it at 1280 by 720 pixels high (720p).
- Make the bitrate, or video bandwidth at 1500 kb/second.
- The audio bandwidth should be 128 kilobytes per second.

There’s an old saying used by Sydney video graphic designers… “For perfect online video you need three things: speed, quality, and file size. Unfortunately, you can’t have all three!” It’s always a fine balance juggling these elements. To keep your file size down, change your frame rate down to 15 or 12 frames per second! This can halve your file size, but may make your video appear slightly “jumpy”, which is a minor sacrifice!
